The hall grounds are currently under consultation with some big changes in mind. The old Propagation centre is being opened up and changes also being made elsewhere in the park. The plans look very promising indeed!

You can see a graphic of the new grounds layout below along with some of the proposed changes bullet pointed.

Some of the proposed changes are:

  • About 1/4 of propagation centre retained for hard standing/out buildings
  • Remainder of propagation centre converted to:
  • Orchard - local varieties
  • Chalk wild-flower meadow
  • Performance space\café lawn
  • Kiosk\Café
  • New pond dipping platform
  • Pond to be dredged
  • New seating
  • New stone bridge and relaid paving around pond
  • Paths realigned to desired routes allowing better travel throughout the park
  • Open up the plantings at the front of the Hall.
  • Selective thinning\coppicing of existing trees in various locations
  • New trees on boundary
  • Clear ivy and rejuvenate existing hedgerow

Options for a new Climbing Frame

The Council have been looking for a suitable piece to go back into the space left by the old climbing frame and this has been proving difficult on two accounts in that all the new pieces have a much larger footprint to provide the same variety of play experience and won't fit in the space of the old one. The second is that the pieces that will fit in the same space offer very little in play value.
The council are also trying to keep away from the turret/cabin platform style pieces as these we fear would still be susceptible to arson damage and possible street life abuse out of hours.
Ian Ross was at "Playfair" a National play equipment exhibition in Coventry.
One of their aims for the day was to see what we could source for Cherry Hinton Hall and I attach a photo of what we think could be suitable and would appreciate the groups view on it.
It is a large 4m high climbing structure with a whole variety of things to do on it, including small slide (the blue object in the foreground).
Although a slightly larger footprint is required we have come to the conclusion that we will have to expand the footprint to get anything decent in anyway.
If progressed this piece would then be retained for any future development of the play area and kept as the centre piece.
