The hall grounds are currently under consultation with some big changes in mind. The old Propagation centre is being opened up and changes also being made elsewhere in the park. The plans look very promising indeed!

You can see a graphic of the new grounds layout below along with some of the proposed changes bullet pointed. 

Some of the proposed changes are:

 

  • About 1/4 of propagation centre retained for hard standing/out buildings
  • Remainder of propagation centre converted to:
  • Orchard - local varieties
  • Chalk wild-flower meadow
  • Performance space\café lawn
  • Kiosk\Café
  • New pond dipping platform
  • Pond to be dredged
  • New seating
  • New stone bridge and relaid paving around pond
  • Paths realigned to desired routes allowing better travel throughout the park
  • Open up the plantings at the front of the Hall.
  • Selective thinning\coppicing of existing trees in various locations
  • New trees on boundary
  • Clear ivy and rejuvenate existing hedgerow

Cherry Hinton Hall has been consistently neglected by the Council for at least a decade. The proposed plan strikes me as a rather disproportional ly expensive way of compensating for lack of basic maintenance.

I particularly value lack of commercializati on of the park see and see no need for catering facilities and other money making enterprises. Every kiosk and cafeteria would take away from the noble simplicity of the space.

I wonder in what sense an orchard would enhance the site, and why the pretty south facing border by the front façade of the house need to be altered to uncover a rather undistinguished Victorian Hall. I have visited the park daily for twenty years, and never crossed my mind that the paths were inadequate to travel the park or that the location of the toilet block was inconvenient; they simply lack maintenance.

Since the erection of the playing area by the pond, the wildfowl population has shrunk considerably. I dread to think of the consequences of actively encouraging children to paddle in the pond not only because its effect on wildlife but also for the children’s health and safety. Even if the water quality were considerably improved, the flow of the stream could not be substantially altered putting children at risk of serious infections caused by the droppings and urine of the endemic rat population in the park.

Hi Rodger,
actually the Folk Festival team are happy with this proposal. The proposal has gone through a lot of consultation with many stakeholders already, not just the friends. Stakeholders include Chypps for the youngsters. The main play area will also receive upgrades and additions, and will actually get these ahead of the other changes.
If you look carefully at the large image or PDF, the vertical dotted line is the current boundary of the propagation center. So in actual fact the Folk Festival only looses the space of 3 trees. The organisers said they were happy with space allocated in the old propagation center to the new yard etc.

Our members are a vast range of ages. You could add in loads of stuff for the young all over the park but then there would be nothing for anyone over 16.
Take a walk around the park on any day and see the ranges of ages and types of people that use the park. The new plans are an attempt at a balancing act for those people and other groups, like the school and folk fest and chypps.
Please take another look and try to see what I am saying.

This strikes me as a vanity legacy proposal. There is no consideration, indeed hardly a mention for the Folk Festival and the changes look to the untrained eye as if it will no longer be able to take place at the Hall. Are a minority organisation really going to be able to end the flagship event that Cambridge hosts in favour of a return to a psuedo Victoriana? Are most of your members elderly as the proposal seems very nostalgic. Nothing for the young.
